Cabin in the Woods: Construction begins early 2017
“We can’t believe a program like this is being built. We need it in Maine. We need it everywhere!,” said a WWII Veteran at a recent American Legion dinner, “Vets, especially senior and disabled vets, need and deserve our help. They put their lives on the line for us.”
These are words we are hearing everywhere as news spreads about a spring 2017 groundbreaking for our Cabin in the Woods program. We have a 75 year lease from Togus for 11 acres of wooded land, and final, approved drawings from Portland architect Robert Foster.
Filling a long time urgent need in Maine, Cabin in the Woods will provide permanent housing and services for isolated homeless veterans (male and female) and their families.
Many veterans, especially those from rural areas, have been unable to access V.A. support due to geographical location, social challenges, and other barriers. This new community is for them.
Construction of 22 privately situated cabins will begin spring 2017 on 11 acres of serene, secluded woods. Cabin in the Woods will provide accessible housing within walking distance of Veterans Services available at Togus, the largest VA Health Care Medical Center in the state of Maine.
The secluded feel of the community is designed to bring comfort to homeless veterans who have struggled to live in other community settings.
The cabins will be connected by a network of paths leading to a Community Cabin, where onsite programming will be provided by local community partners, VA Health Care Case Managers, and Volunteers of America staff.
Two bedroom cabins will be the first family housing available for homeless female veterans with children in the state of Maine, filling a need for services that has existed for decades.
We want to thank the Home Depot Foundation for providing a $225,000 grant toward construction costs. To learn more about this incredible new program, click here for updates or call Michael Coon 207-373-1140. Updates will be posted on our website weekly, once construction begins.
